Position on Gender Surgery and Fairness in Sports
When questioned on a potential national ban on gender surgery for minors, Talarico responded affirmatively. He emphasized his consistent stance on the matter, noting his efforts to amend a Texas bill that he found excessively broad by attempting to limit surgeries for minors. However, his amendment did not succeed.
In his past legislative role in the Texas House of Representatives, Talarico opposed SB 14, a bill restricting specific gender surgeries and treatments for minors. Despite supporting numerous amendments, they ultimately failed to pass.
Addressing the issue of men competing in women’s sports, Talarico stated he opposes it if it threatens safety or fairness. Drawing on his experience as a former public school teacher, he underlined his commitment to the welfare and fairness for student athletes.
Clarification on Controversial Comments
Talarico revisited a statement he made in 2021 about God being non-binary. He explained his intention to challenge the use of human categories to define God, aiming for theological discussion rather than controversy.
On the topic of gender, Talarico admitted to a past misstatement about there being more than two genders. He clarified that he believes in two sexes, with a small percentage of people having genetic abnormalities. He emphasized that his comments had been misconstrued.
Critique of the Supreme Court and Focus on Affordability
Despite his retreat from prior controversial remarks, Talarico criticized the Supreme Court, describing it as corrupt and in need of reforms. He expressed support for binding conduct codes, term limits, and possible expansion of the court.
Talarico pledged to prioritize affordability as a key campaign message, noting the financial struggles of Texans. He opposed proposals for a state income tax, labeling a previous measure redundant. He criticized Paxton, labeling him as corrupt and predicting attempts to shift focus from the real issues.
