Genetic Study Links Personality Traits to Health Outcomes

A comprehensive international study has revealed that personality traits may impact health outcomes, specifically hospital time. Researchers have identified over 1,200 genetic variants tied to the “Big Five” personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These genetic patterns overlap with various life outcomes, such as health, longevity, education, and career paths.

The study, conducted by the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium, analyzed data from 46 global research cohorts. Participants provided DNA samples and completed questionnaires to assess the Big Five personality traits.

Insights on Genetic Influence

The researchers did not find a single gene responsible for personality but discovered numerous genetic variants that together influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Ted Schwaba, an assistant professor at Michigan State University’s Department of Psychology and lead author of the study, stated, “There is no single ‘personality gene.’ Personality traits are linked to many genetic variants, although the impact of each is small. However, their collective effects can be significant.”

Link Between Neuroticism and Hospital Time

One key finding was the connection between genetic variants associated with neuroticism and increased hospital time. Neuroticism is linked to experiencing negative emotions like anxiety and worry. Schwaba noted, “Genetic variants associated with neuroticism predict more time spent in the hospital, which is useful for physicians and health researchers.”

Genetic variants associated with neuroticism may predict longer hospital stays due to more complex or co-occurring conditions requiring further assessment and treatment.

Consultant psychiatrist T. Ayodele Ajayi explained that people with higher neuroticism levels might exhibit more complex health conditions, leading to longer hospital stays for treatment and discharge planning. According to Ajayi, higher sensitivity to stress and psychological distress can impact coping with diagnoses and recovery.

Additionally, behavioral patterns linked to neuroticism, such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, might complicate recovery. Ajayi emphasized that these findings indicate an association rather than a direct causation, warranting further research.

Personality, Genetics, and Environmental Interactions

The research indicated that genetic patterns linked to personality also connect to physical and mental health, longevity, education, and career outcomes. Everyday habits, like activity levels and sleep patterns, showed associations with genetic variants tied to personality traits.

For example, genetic variants linked to conscientiousness correlated with increased daytime activity. Variants tied to openness to experience and extraversion associated with nocturnal tendencies. The interaction between genetics, personality, and environment suggests that these elements do not function independently.

For instance, genetic variants linked to openness were associated with living in cosmopolitan areas. Such environments might further influence or shape personality traits. These variants are also related to income and job switching, offering insights for vocational studies.

Beyond Genetics

The study compared participants’ genetic data with personality scores to identify specific variants for each trait. Despite the small impact of individual genetic variants, their combined influence was significant and consistent across populations.

For example, a genetic variant associated with extraversion in a young Dutch adult could predict extraversion in an older American adult. Comparisons among relatives suggested that shared environments alone could not explain these associations.

Schwaba concluded, “Personality seems relevant almost everywhere. We hope this study encourages other scientists to integrate personality traits into further research.”

The findings emphasize the role of both genetics and environment in shaping personality. This study’s implications extend beyond psychology, potentially informing medicine, health, education, and workplace research.
