The New England Patriots started their NFL season with a narrow 13-10 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks. This season opener was marked by the Patriots’ inability to secure an upset win despite a strong effort.
In the decisive fourth quarter, Patriots’ quarterback Drake Maye orchestrated a drive that could have resulted in a touchdown to win the game or a field goal to tie it. Unfortunately, his pass into the end zone was intercepted, ending the team’s hopes for victory.
After the game, Maye addressed the press, acknowledging his mistake and expressing his disappointment. ‘I lost patience, and it cost us,’ he admitted. Maye emphasized his need to return to the fundamentals of his game to ensure that such errors do not recur.
‘Decisions cost us the game on my part,’ Maye reflected. ‘It’s a long season, but at the same time, you can’t have those; it’s unacceptable. I gotta get back to work.’
The interception by the Seahawks’ Josh Jobe came with just 21 seconds left in the game. Maye’s attempted pass to a teammate in the end zone instead found Jobe, clinching the win for Seattle.
Overall, Maye completed 23 out of 33 pass attempts, totaling 178 yards with a touchdown to newcomer Eli Raridon. Yet, he also threw three interceptions, with Seattle’s defense proving formidable.
The Patriots had a chance for a win, particularly as the Seahawks were without their Super Bowl-winning quarterback Sam Darnold, who exited in the first quarter due to an injury. Darnold was replaced by backup Drew Lock. Initial reports suggest Darnold’s injury may not be severe, but no specific return date has been announced.
Looking ahead, the Patriots must reassess and prepare for their next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, slated for Sunday, September 20. This AFC match will feature Maye facing off against seasoned quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
