Falcons Update Quarterback Situation for Week 1

On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons made a significant announcement regarding their starting quarterback for Week 1. Tua Tagovailoa was chosen to lead the team against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This decision was part of a competition with Michael Penix Jr., who had only recently returned to full practices after recovering from a torn ACL. Although there are differing opinions on Tagovailoa’s readiness, his preseason performance raised some doubts.

However, an unexpected twist occurred on Friday. Tagovailoa was absent from the open portion of practice due to an oblique injury suffered on Thursday. This development created uncertainty about his ability to play in the upcoming Steelers game, which was just 48 hours away.

Ian Rapoport, an NFL insider, later confirmed that Tagovailoa has been ruled out for the game against the Steelers.

While Penix had an underwhelming performance last season before his injury, Tagovailoa did not fare much better in the preseason. In two appearances, he completed 10 out of 13 passes for 117 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Although this wasn’t the worst showing imaginable, it did not inspire confidence, especially as he was outperformed by both veteran Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand.

With Penix already ruled out for Week 1, and Tagovailoa’s sideline confirmed, Cooper Rush has been designated as the starting quarterback. Jack Strand will serve as the backup. Oblique strains can vary in recovery time, often healing in one to three weeks if minor, but requiring more time if severe. Tagovailoa’s absence, even for a single game, is a setback. Fans have already expressed skepticism about his role as a starter and might look to other options available to the Falcons.
