Porter County government officials recently gathered to address storm cleanup efforts, facing a projected cost between $7 million and $10.75 million. The cleanup involves removing debris and addressing vegetation at compost sites filled after recent storms. These efforts were detailed by county officials during a council meeting.
Mike Jabo, Executive Director of Planning & Storm Water Management, highlighted the random nature of storm impact, with significant damage in Jackson Township and southeast Chesterton. The storm affected 158 square miles and 305 road miles, notably county roads 250 E and 350 E. While roads are now passable, some areas still deal with lingering debris.
The council discussed potential funding sources. Options like the Cumulative Bridge Fund were considered, although legal advisors cautioned against this due to repayment concerns. Alternative funding discussions included utilizing Porter County Foundation money, pending approval from its board members.
The county plans to hire Del Sol Consulting, a firm specializing in FEMA assistance, to help secure reimbursements. The firm charges 5% of the cleanup cost, a percentage FEMA allows for administrative expenses. Research from past incidents highlighted challenges in receiving high reimbursement rates, emphasizing the need for accurate documentation.
Bid requests for debris removal contractors will be posted soon, giving companies two weeks to submit their offers. The cleanup will concentrate on unincorporated county areas, as confirmed by Jim Biggs, Commissioner. Organizing efforts include a proposed county-wide debris pickup strategy similar to Valparaiso’s leaf collection.
A communications strategy aims to inform residents of planned efforts and available assistance. Ongoing public resources are available on the county’s EMA Facebook page and homepage. Volunteer groups are being connected with residents needing help moving debris to pickup areas.
Additionally, the county has set up ‘one-stop shops’ for resident assistance at Woodland Park in Portage. These sessions, running from Wednesday to Saturday, offer support from 15 vetted agencies. Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
