The Nashville International Airport is set to be renamed in honor of the late Dolly Parton. This decision comes after the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s board voted unanimously for the name change. The board conducted a 6-0 vote on Friday to initiate the process, although the final name has not yet been decided.
“We are working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated,” the airport authority informed CBS News in a statement.
The vote followed the recent passing of the iconic singer and Tennessee native at the age of 80 due to a private battle with cancer. Dolly Parton famously graced the stage of the Glastonbury Festival in 2014, leaving a lasting impact on her fans worldwide.
Governor Bill Lee suggested the name change, highlighting its appropriateness as a tribute to “our state’s favorite daughter.” He added that the airport should greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.
Before her passing, an online petition to rename the airport after Parton collected over 175,000 signatures. Parton, addressing the petition on “CBS Mornings” in January 2025, expressed her surprise, describing it initially as a “joke,” but noted that she was “very flattered” by the gesture.
The Nashville airport’s current code, BNA, stands for Berry Field Nashville, named in honor of Col. Harry S. Berry, as reported by local CBS affiliate WTVF. This potential name change will require Federal Aviation Administration approval.
In a statement, the airport’s board conveyed gratitude for the widespread support and enthusiasm from the community and Parton’s fans globally.
Among the airports across the United States named after notable figures are President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Florida, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, and John Wayne Airport in California.
In addition to the airport renaming, Tennessee state Senator Jessie Seal proposed legislation to declare September 25 as “9 to 5” Day, honoring Parton’s famous anthem.
