The Los Angeles Rams faced a challenging start to the NFL season as they arrived in Australia a mere 24 hours before their international Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers. In contrast, the 49ers had been in Melbourne for a week, allowing them to adjust to the significant time change effectively.
On Thursday night, San Francisco displayed a more prepared team, securing a decisive victory with a final score of 27-7. This sharp performance overshadowed the Rams, whose offense, led by the reigning league MVP Matthew Stafford, struggled significantly compared to their dominating performance in the 2025 season.
The Rams’ last-minute travel plan attracted widespread criticism from the NFL community prior to the game. After their defeat, the criticism intensified.
During Friday morning’s episode of “First Take” on ESPN, Stephen A. Smith criticized the Rams’ strategy, referring to their travel decision as a “mistake.” He remarked, “You got there 28 hours before the game. Clearly, that appeared to be a mistake.”
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had an impressive performance, amassing 205 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He connected with Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson for scores. In contrast, Stafford finished the game with only 155 passing yards and one interception.
The Rams will aim for a rebound in their upcoming Week 2 game against the New York Giants on Monday.
