Impact of War and Economic Crisis on Iranian Lives

In Tehran, during the Nowruz holidays, the traditional main bazaar stood nearly empty as people walked past closed shops. Since the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran, the country’s economy has been in turmoil.

Economic Disruption and Rising Unemployment

Rasoul, a 42-year-old engineer, had prepared for financial hardship by considering driving for Snapp, the Iranian version of Uber, as a backup. However, the war and economic collapse brought challenges beyond his predictions. Inflation soared, affecting essentials like gas, food, and rent. The official unemployment rate is reported at 9%, yet experts believe the real number is much higher. In April, a prominent job portal, Jobvision, noted a 50% rise in resume submissions.

Alireza Mahjoob, head of Iran’s Workers House, acknowledged the severe employment crisis. On state television, he expressed concerns about how the growing joblessness would devastate the vulnerable working class.

Rasoul’s Struggles

Rasoul’s company, reliant on global networks, faced difficulties when the government restricted internet access amid protest crackdowns. By mid-February, he lost his job, leading to depression. Desperation forced him to drive for Snapp at night, but the escalating war rendered this plan ineffective. Sanctions and blockades increased fuel costs and vehicle maintenance expenses while bombings made nighttime driving hazardous. Rasoul’s personal plans, like starting a family, were indefinitely postponed.

Impact on Other Industries

Other sectors also experienced collapse. Kayvan, another engineer in Tehran, worked for a business supplying raw materials to the oil sector. As the conflict intensified, trade ceased and the company’s operations ended. Shipping routes were closed, including the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Kayvan found himself out of work, forced to depend on his wife’s earnings and their diminishing savings.

Seeking Stability Amid Uncertainty

Rasoul eventually found a sales manager position, but enduring uncertainty persisted due to ongoing conflict and economic instability. “We’re like passengers on a train,” he remarked, unsure of the future.
