Nashville International Airport is moving forward with a plan to rename itself in honor of the late country music icon Dolly Parton. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority unanimously voted 6-0 on Friday to commence the renaming process, as stated by the authority.
While the exact new name is not finalized, the authority is coordinating with relevant parties to integrate Parton’s name and legacy into the airport’s title. Airport officials emphasized that this step is just the beginning, with more updates expected in the coming months.
This vote represents the first step in a multifaceted process. In the coming months, we anticipate having more definitive plans to share regarding the next steps and implementation.
This initiative followed efforts to honor Parton shortly after her passing at age 80. Previously, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced plans with Nashville International Airport to consider renaming it in her tribute.
Lee had discussions with Parton’s team, who reportedly welcomed the initiative. Public support has been robust, with a petition for the renaming, amassing over 155,000 verified signatures.
Dolly Parton is a beloved figure in Tennessee due to her famous music and philanthropic efforts, including her Imagination Library literacy program. In 2021, she resisted a legislative proposal for a statue of her at the state Capitol, expressing gratitude but asking lawmakers to dismiss the bill.
I hope, though, that somewhere down the road, several years from now or perhaps after I’m gone, if you still feel I deserve it, then I’m certain I will stand proud in our great state Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.
