The longstanding football rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, previously known as the Border War, has taken a controversial turn. Prior to their recent matchup, Kansas released a hype video that has stirred significant attention.
The video featured elements typical of such content: music, highlights, and voiceovers. However, it shocked many by incorporating imagery related to slavery and the Civil War, highlighting Missouri’s historical stance during the Civil War.
The move resulted in over 12,000 reposts and 34 million views online, suggesting that the impact was significant. Though some may view this as a poor taste, the video’s virality indicates the effectiveness of bold PR strategies.
Within the video, Kansas positioned itself as the heroic entity while casting Missouri as a villain, with references to historical figures like Abolitionist John Brown and Bushwacker leader William Quantrill.
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz expressed disappointment over the video’s timing, stating, “I was a little disappointed. I thought that was uncalled for. Especially on 9/11 when we need more unity now than ever before. I’m just glad that this ‘right versus wrong’ bullcrap that was started got settled on the football field, because it’s a football game.”
The game ended with Missouri defeating Kansas 38-21, pulling ahead in the second half. Drinkwitz acknowledged the contentious nature of the rivalry but emphasized the importance of focusing on the sport rather than external themes.
Despite the controversy, rivalry games in college football remain a source of excitement for fans, and the Kansas versus Missouri matchup continues to be one of the memorable ones.
The competitive spirit and personal stakes illustrate why college football often captivates audiences. The hope remains for a focus on sportsmanship and the game itself in future encounters.
