As the Browns reached the Jaguars’ 33-yard line within their first four plays, Watson made a critical error. Failing to see Jaguars linebacker Foyesade Oluokun in coverage, Watson’s pass was intercepted, giving possession back to Jaguars at their 41-yard line.
Watson’s start was less than ideal, coming after weeks of mixed reactions from fans. During the preseason, some Browns fans booed Watson, leading to comments from him. In response to the fan reactions, Watson had shared his feelings about an incident when he was previously injured, sparking further discussion.
Former coach Rex Ryan expressed strong opinions, suggesting on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” that Watson should have been benched, citing the importance of the fan base.
Watson’s performance continues under scrutiny, especially with Shedeur Sanders potentially ready to step in if necessary. Following the turnover, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence capitalized with a touchdown pass to Parker Washington, setting an early lead in the first quarter.
