A 70-year-old man named Craig Berg, who went missing a week ago while hiking in Isle Royale National Park, has been found ‘alive and alert’ according to officials. He suffered from hypothermia but was successfully rescued by the joint efforts of Coast Guard and Michigan State Police crews.
The Coast Guard and Michigan State Police rescued an injured, ailing man Saturday after he went missing in Isle Royale National Park on Sept. 5,’ said the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes.
A video released by authorities shows a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City hoisting Berg from the ground. Following his rescue, he was transported to a regional airport in Gwinn for emergency medical evaluation.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding Berg’s condition or experiences during the time he was missing. He was spotted by ‘good Samaritan’ backpackers in the park on Saturday. Subsequently, Michigan State Police foot patrols and K-9 units reached him.
Multiple agencies and resources participated in the search effort, deploying a 45-foot Coast Guard boat, drones, and seaplanes. Agencies involved included the National Park Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
‘We’re also thankful to the fellow hikers who helped, Isle Royale Seaplanes, and No One Left Behind K9 Search and Rescue,’ stated Lt. Ben Eckola, a Michigan State Police public information officer. ‘Everyone’s efforts played an important part in finding Craig.’
The Detroit Free Press detailed that Berg, a Royal Oak, Michigan resident, arrived at the national park on Aug. 27 for a solo hike but did not return on Sept. 5. Isle Royale National Park resides on a remote island in Lake Superior near the Canadian border.
Due to its isolation, Isle Royale is among the least-visited national parks and offers minimal infrastructure. Berg’s wife, Debbie, shared that only two rangers are stationed on the island, which has two camp stores and a lodge.
Officials deployed water, land, and air crews in their search for Berg after he went missing. The park’s website notes that cell phone service is often ‘unreliable,’ with prohibitions on many types of equipment including bicycles, motorized vehicles, and drones.
