Dedication and Renaming Ceremony
On September 12, 2026, the Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District in the Grand Crossing neighborhood held a dedication and renaming ceremony. The event was in honor of Officer Dorelle C. Brandon, the first female Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty on January 25, 1984.
Officer Brandon’s Legacy
Officer Brandon was accidentally shot by her partner during a drug raid on Chicago’s Far South Side. Her sacrifice marked a significant moment in the department’s history, being both the first female officer and the second officer within a span of nine days to die in such circumstances.
Ceremony Highlights
During the ceremony, retired Officer Matthew Brandon, her husband, was visibly moved, wiping away tears. The 3rd District Grand Crossing Police Station was officially renamed in her honor, marking the occasion with a formal unveiling.
A police officer wore a remembrance ribbon, showing respect for Officer Brandon’s service. Retired Officer Rita Pritchett performed a song in remembrance, contributing to the somber yet celebratory atmosphere.
Family and Community Participation
Officer Tanya Scott, Brandon’s niece, placed a remembrance pin on Marvin Brandon, her stepson, as part of the proceedings. Andrea Liggins, Brandon’s sister, traveled from Orlando to attend and listen during the dedication ceremony.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and other attendees paid tribute to Officer Brandon’s legacy, celebrating her commitment and sacrifice for the community.
