Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill spoke at the National Black Footwear Forum in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday night. Their conversation revolved around issues of racism and Kaepernick’s life, including his forthcoming memoir, “The Perilous Fight.” The event, attended by OutKick reporters, did not allow questions from the audience.
A notable part of the discussion was Hill’s comments on a story from Kaepernick’s memoir involving his mother encouraging him to date Taylor Swift. Hill and Kaepernick shared their thoughts on his mother wanting him to be with someone like Swift, suggesting his lack of interest in dating white women.
“Now that I had my own car, it was time for me to embrace another teenage rite of passage: a girlfriend. I started seeing a very cute Black girl named Crystal. Right away, I noticed how different I felt with her than in my own home. I could talk to Crystal, really talk to her, without having to explain myself; it was a remarkable discovery, being understood up front and without question. When I visited her home, I was stunned by how warm and welcoming her family was. I immediately felt comfortable there,” Kaepernick stated.
In his memoir, Kaepernick describes dating Crystal, a Black girl, and feeling understood in her family environment. He contrasts this with his mother’s reaction, who hid their portrait together, yet displayed one with Lindsay, a white girl, prominently. This reflected his mother’s belief that Lindsay represented the type of girl he should be interested in.
Kaepernick further recounts that his mother later suggested he pursue a relationship with Taylor Swift, a decision he did not favor, despite Swift’s fame. The memoir highlights his struggles with familial expectations versus personal identity.
Throughout the conversation, Kaepernick addressed his upbringing by white parents who, according to him, did not grasp or support his “blackness.” He mentioned their lack of support for his national anthem protest, interpreting it as a disconnect in their understanding.
Hill refrained from challenging Kaepernick, and instead attributed his poor play to injuries. She also advocated for the Atlanta Falcons to consider signing Kaepernick as a quarterback for the 2026 season.
