Senator Mitch McConnell Returns to Capitol Hill After Health-Related Absence

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has returned to Capitol Hill following a three-month absence. He arrived for a vote on a judicial nomination, marking his first Senate vote since June. McConnell’s return ends the speculation about his health, as he was seen entering the Senate chamber in a wheelchair.

In a statement before his return, McConnell expressed eagerness to resume his duties. ‘Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June. I’m looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues,’ he stated. Briefly addressing reporters, he mentioned, ‘Time to get back to work, finish the job for this Congress.’

McConnell, aged 84, last participated in a Senate vote on June 11. Shortly after, his office announced his hospitalization following a fall, which was corroborated by an EMS dispatch call. Despite limited information on his condition, McConnell’s office confirmed he was ‘fully engaged’ with his staff, and several top Republicans had communicated with him.

Democratic Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky formally requested an update on McConnell’s health in July. In response, McConnell released a statement explaining his hospitalization resulted from a fall and that he was in rehabilitation. He was discharged from the rehab center on August 6, nearly two months after being hospitalized.

McConnell’s absence is part of a series of health challenges he has faced. A childhood polio survivor, he has had recent health scares, including a concussion, flu-like symptoms, and two instances of freezing up while speaking. ‘My recovery has been a long and often frustrating process, and the lingering effects of childhood polio haven’t made it any easier,’ McConnell said, acknowledging he is not fully recovered but committed to participating in critical votes.

McConnell holds the record as the longest party leader in Senate history. He led the Senate GOP conference from 2007 until stepping down after the 2024 elections. He is scheduled to retire next year, choosing not to seek re-election for another term.
