Senator Mitch McConnell returned to Congress on Monday after an extended absence due to a fall at his home. The 84-year-old lawmaker expressed eagerness to resume duties, acknowledging a challenging recovery exacerbated by childhood polio’s lingering effects.
McConnell emphasized his commitment to being present for crucial votes, despite still undergoing physical therapy. “Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since June. I’m eager to return to the Senate floor and reconnect with my colleagues,” he stated. His office highlighted the support from Kentuckians.
McConnell humorously noted media interest in his return. “I’ve dodged questions for two decades, so I wasn’t sure how many would show up,” he quipped. He outlined priorities like the farm bill and NATO support against Russia.
Previously, McConnell’s team anticipated his return by Wednesday for a crucial committee vote. His absence stalled the farm bill’s progress. Democrat Charles Booker criticized McConnell’s prolonged absence, accusing him of neglecting Kentucky voters and failing to provide health updates.
Governor Andy Beshear echoed concerns over McConnell’s lack of communication, urging transparency and suggesting resignation if McConnell couldn’t fulfill duties. Despite critiques, Senate leaders remained supportive.
McConnell disclosed details of his June hospitalization, including pneumonia and therapy. Following discharge in August, he engaged remotely in Senate matters. His salary and staff continued operations during his 94-day absence, garnering $45,000 in salary.
Although absent from public view since June, McConnell communicated through statements and maintained staff interactions. His return marks the end of the longest absence in his Senate career.
