New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed strong criticism of the federal government’s actions toward immigrant communities. During a recent announcement, he stated that the government has conducted a ‘campaign of violence and terror’ against immigrants, who he believes form the backbone of the city. His remarks accompanied the announcement of legal action against the Trump administration by New York City and five other sanctuary jurisdictions. This lawsuit challenges a new rule concerning public charge determinations for immigrants.
Mamdani accused the federal immigration agency, ICE, of invading homes, workplaces, and schools, targeting individuals seeking refuge and opportunities in the U.S. He viewed these actions as an assault on civic values. According to Mamdani, immigrants play crucial roles in city life, contributing to public services, infrastructure, and historical labor reforms. He praised their efforts in advancing workplace protections and fair labor practices.
The lawsuit involves a coalition of sanctuary jurisdictions including Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County, alongside New York City. They aim to contest the Trump administration’s stricter public charge rule, effective Friday. The rule, introduced by the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in July, permits officials to consider noncash benefits like Medicaid, SNAP, and housing vouchers when evaluating if immigrants could become public charges.
Previously, under guidelines from the Biden administration in 2022, assessments focused on whether applicants depended primarily on cash benefits such as Supplemental Security Income and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Mamdani labeled the rule as ‘gross illegality,’ predicting severe impact by deterring immigrant families, including U.S. citizens’ children, from accessing necessary public services due to fears of future immigration disadvantages.
Zach Kahler, spokesperson for USCIS, defended the rule as a measure that ensures noncitizens are self-sufficient and not reliant on taxpayer-funded benefits. Kahler emphasized the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting American taxpayers and the nation’s security and financial health.
