California Governor Gavin Newsom recently stated he would refrain from running for president if Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, decides to enter the race. During an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN, Newsom expressed his position, citing respect and consideration for Harris as reasons for his decision.
Newsom remarked, “I don’t know if she runs, but we’ll see. But I wouldn’t run if she ran.” When Tapper seemed surprised, Newsom replied, “Of course not. Why would I? I wouldn’t do that to her … I wouldn’t do that to you. I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time. Who needs that?”
The conversation took place while Tapper and Newsom were fly-fishing in Montana. Tapper seemed puzzled by Newsom’s stance, pointing out that Harris has already run for president twice, whereas Newsom has not. Despite the discussion, Newsom maintained his stance, acknowledging the crossover of supporters he shares with Harris. Newsom stated, “I know her base of supporters. I know her friends. The Venn diagram on that is just pure crossover. I wouldn’t do that.”
Though Newsom is often mentioned as a likely contender for the 2028 Democratic nomination, Kamala Harris currently holds a significant lead among Democratic hopefuls. According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Harris has a 24.5% lead compared to Newsom’s 13.5%. Other potential candidates, such as Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Jon Ossoff, remain close contenders.
Additionally, current betting odds from Polymarket show Ocasio-Cortez leading with over 19%, followed by Ossoff at 16%, Newsom at 12.7%, and Harris trailing at 8%. These numbers reflect the ongoing discussions and speculations surrounding potential candidates for the 2028 race.
