Trump Advocates for UN Reform and Sanctions at General Assembly

President Donald Trump will participate in the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. His focus is on increasing international cooperation to address Iran’s actions. Even as his administration aims to reshape the global institution, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz discussed the approach in an exclusive interview.

Confronting Iran’s Threats

The conflict between the U.S. and Iran has persisted for seven months. Trump plans to make a speech and meet Gulf leaders on Tuesday, addressing the ongoing situation. This summit aims to apply more economic pressure on Tehran. European allies face challenges from Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, while questions arise about the U.N.’s future capacity amidst budget cuts.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz emphasized the need for allies to fully enforce sanctions against Tehran. There will be consequences for noncompliance. “The president is focused on future global security,” Waltz stated.

European and Asian partners have been reluctant to join Trump’s efforts against Iran, a conflict that started with U.S. and Israeli strikes in February. Iran has significantly disrupted key shipping routes.

Iran’s Economic Struggles

Waltz noted Iran’s economic difficulties, highlighting its currency devaluation and inflation. He emphasized the administration’s stance: preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon is a priority.

The UNSC recently faced a setback when Russia and China blocked continued monitoring of international sanctions on Iran.

Trump will also engage with Gulf leaders about regional security concerns, offering an opportunity to address their perspectives directly.

Reforming the United Nations

The Trump administration continues its dialogue on reforming the United Nations. Although Trump has criticized the organization, efforts focus on budget cuts totaling over $1 billion, reducing staff, and minimizing peacekeeping operations.

While the U.S. paid $725 million towards the U.N.’s budget and $102 million for peacekeeping, it still owes over $1.3 billion.

Waltz affirmed that despite criticism, the U.S. does not intend to leave the United Nations. This international platform remains crucial for diplomatic discussions.

Strategic Agreements in the Arctic

Trump announced a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland. This agreement expands U.S. military influence in the Arctic while preventing adversaries from gaining a foothold on the island.

The deal underscores the Arctic’s growing importance, as melting ice opens new shipping routes and resource access.

According to Waltz, effective communication with Denmark helped secure the agreement.

Gathering at the United Nations

The U.N. event expects participation from numerous global leaders and officials. The session runs from Sept. 20-28, covering topics like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and international security issues.

Trump’s administration seeks to test their approach, which they express as “Make the U.N. great again,” aiming for greater efficiency and impact in tackling global challenges.
