The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened to great fanfare with a party that drew many celebrities. Held under the museum’s distinctive elliptical oculus at sunset, the event mirrored the glamour of an Academy Awards after-party. Oprah Winfrey was seen embracing Robert De Niro, while Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart chatted with Spike Lee before bypassing the red carpet. Laura Dern and Greta Gerwig shared a laugh near the entrance, and Samuel L. Jackson humorously claimed his spot on a curved bench.
The guest list included many prominent figures like Owen Wilson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, and Magic Johnson. Notably, government leaders like Governor Gavin Newsom and Rep. Nancy Pelosi joined the celebration. In the posh fifth-floor Skywalker Grill, directors gathered for a photograph of significant Hollywood influence; this included names such as Jon M. Chu, Guillermo del Toro, and Steven Spielberg, among others. Organizers searched for Gerwig, but she had moved elsewhere in the venue.
Artists, although fewer in number, made their appearance. Figures like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami mingled with museum directors like Joanne Heyler and Michael Govan, who was relieved to be attending instead of hosting. During the event, Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, addressed the critiques the museum faced since its press preview. They highlighted why narrative art is crucial, even countering the criticism about the lack of context in curatorial choices. Lucas emphasized his habit of facing skepticism throughout his career and defended his role in curating the gallery space.
Lucas argued that illustration is an art form and that illustrators deserve recognition. Many major museums ignore this art form; Lucas hopes his museum will change that perception. The narrative surrounding the museum characterized it as a passionate endeavor from Lucas, who aims to honor overlooked illustrators. According to Lucas, art is subjective, emotional, and every person decides what art means to them.
Hobson shared the challenges faced during the museum’s establishment, given the civic pushback and legal battles over land use. Eventually, Los Angeles became home to the museum after discussions in other cities. Humorously, Hobson advised against starting a museum when one’s spouse suggests it due to the complexities involved.
Queen Latifah, co-host of the event, celebrated Lucas’ vision, despite the criticisms likening narrative art to popcorn movies. She highlighted the importance of this art form in their lives. The event concluded with a drone show, showcasing images from the museum’s collection narrated by Oprah Winfrey and Samuel L. Jackson. A performance by the Black Eyed Peas followed, bringing the celebrations into full swing.
