Blainey Dowling: From Adversity to Action on the Field

Blainey Dowling, a senior quarterback for St. Xavier, returned to play football in Chicago after four years. His comeback was marked by a challenging 42-point loss in adverse weather conditions. Despite this, Dowling described the experience as a ‘blessing.’ This sentiment gains context when considering his previous career, marked by two elbow surgeries and medical advice to step away from playing football.

Dowling, a graduate of Mount Carmel, contemplated retiring due to his injuries. However, he opted to continue at St. Xavier, finding new opportunities. On the field, he displayed resilience by throwing for 175 yards and securing two touchdowns during a game against Indiana Wesleyan. Although the team lost 59-17, Dowling’s performance stood out. Freshman Coen Demack contributed significantly with five catches for 81 yards, notably a 56-yard touchdown.

St. Xavier’s efforts were supported by senior Owen Schickel, an alum of Mount Carmel, who effectively made 14 tackles and forced two fumbles. Indiana Wesleyan’s victory was driven by Arjun Lothe, who passed for 278 yards and scored three touchdowns, alongside Ryan Whitwell, who ran 243 yards and scored twice. Blake Brumbaugh made notable contributions with 170 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

This game was Dowling’s first in Chicago since 2022, when he was part of a state championship-winning team. His return was witnessed by family members who had long awaited this moment. Dowling gained recognition earlier in the season in a match against Taylor, throwing for 449 yards and earning accolades as the MSFA Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week.

St. Xavier coach Mike Feminis commended Dowling’s performance, acknowledging the impressive return after four years without action. Feminis remains optimistic, encouraging Dowling to exceed past expectations. The coach likens the scenario to a fighter’s return, emphasizing patience and development.

Demack has emerged as a key receiver, with substantial contributions so far in the season. He praises Dowling’s leadership and desire to win, despite the team’s current record. Feminis supports facing strong opponents to strengthen the team’s performance ahead of the MSFA season, viewing each challenging game as invaluable preparation.

Dowling, a communications major, aspires to open a training facility, sharing his knowledge and experiences with younger athletes. He advocates perseverance and resilience, encouraging others to face adversity head-on and never give up.
