Inglewood Mayor Faces Allegations at Community Event

The city of Inglewood has faced significant turmoil following allegations against Mayor James T. Butts Jr. The claims suggest that the mayor acted inappropriately during a community event, accusations he vehemently denies, dismissing them as politically driven. At an emotional news conference, Butts addressed the claims publicly for the first time. He asserted that the accusations are part of a broader political conflict involving local activists and operators of Inglewood’s entertainment venues.

The incident in question allegedly occurred during the ‘Votechella’ event on the lawn outside City Hall. Specific details remain uncertain, as the accused student and her family have not commented publicly. They have reportedly been advised by legal counsel to refrain from discussing the matter until an investigation is completed.

During the conference, Butts delivered a passionate eight-minute speech. He accused his opponents of engaging in a defamatory and racially charged campaign against him. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, he noted a lack of evidence for any complaint filed by the alleged victim or her family. No questions were fielded post-speech.

The allegations emerged when a coalition of political activists organized their own news conference. However, none of the speakers claim to have witnessed the alleged misconduct. Several attendees reported seeing the student looking uncomfortable as the mayor held her tightly for a group photo but opted to remain anonymous for safety concerns.

“Any time a young minor says they’ve been inappropriately touched, it’s our job as adults not to question them,” activist Najee Ali stated during the activists’ news conference. “It’s our job to believe, protect, and demand accountability.”

In response, Butts announced his intention to serve activists, including Najee Ali, with cease-and-desist letters for spreading what he calls slanderous and baseless claims. Among those receiving these letters are political candidates Lena Davidson and Leonard Redway, both running for the Inglewood City Council. Butts also identified his political adversaries as supporters of Measure BB. This measure seeks to ban commercial advertising in public areas, potentially eliminating a significant revenue source for the city.

Inglewood City Attorney Rick Olivarez confirmed no complaints related to the incident have been received. Inglewood Unified School District officials were present but did not comment on any investigation. Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, speaking at the mayor’s news conference, called for responsible handling of serious allegations, emphasizing that accusations are not facts due to the lack of a police report or formal complaint.

Activists, including Najee Ali, have approached the District Attorney’s office requesting a criminal investigation. Davidson raised broader concerns about Butts’ past conduct, citing historic allegations of misconduct. Despite these claims, legal actions against him, including accusations of sexual harassment and financial mismanagement, have previously been dismissed or rejected by courts.
