In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a car crash turned fatal during an attempted stop by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The incident occurred over the weekend and involved a man identified as Mario David Coronado Juarez, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. He had resided and worked in Grand Rapids for seven years.
The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) provided details in a release, stating that ICE agents tried to stop the vehicle. The driver did not comply and fled, leading to a crash around 7 a.m. on Sunday. The vehicle collided with a tree on Century Avenue SW and McKendrick Street SW, subsequently catching fire. Coronado Juarez, the only person in the car, died at the scene.
“About seven o’clock, we hear a ‘boom,’” a neighbor explained. “It was like a sonic boom. When I looked outside, there was a car smoking, and multiple cars parked in various directions.”
Witnesses reported seeing several unmarked vehicles, likely belonging to law enforcement, with individuals in what looked like bulletproof vests. The neighbor captured video evidence, pointing out an unmarked tan sedan, presumably connected to immigration enforcement.
Emergency responders, including police and fire personnel, arrived after the unmarked vehicles. A fire truck then blocked neighbors’ views of the scene.
A witness expressed frustration with the situation, commenting, “We know immigration is trying to get everybody out of here, and that’s not right. Coronado Juarez was a construction worker sending money back to his family in Guatemala.”
His family remembers him as a dedicated worker who supported his children by sending funds home. A family friend described him as a “good person” who focused on work and family.
Given the situation’s complexity, Michigan State Police have been asked to assist with the investigation. The GRPD stated that its team has limited access to information from federal agents about events leading up to the crash.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet provided a comment on the matter.
