Jaclyn Smith Reflects on Love, Career, and Personal Growth

Jaclyn Smith, known for her role as Kelly Garrett in “Charlie’s Angels,” found love unexpectedly in a hospital room. Her memoir, “I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie,” reveals her relationship with Dr. Brad Allen, whom she met during her father’s heart surgery in 1991. Despite living apart for 17 of their 35 years together, they married in Los Angeles in 1997.

Smith and Allen maintained a long-distance relationship while Allen worked in Chicago. According to Smith, the key to their successful marriage was knowing each other’s values and families well before tying the knot. Her daughter and son played significant roles in their wedding, emphasizing family unity.

“The greatest love comes when you’re least looking for it,” Smith noted, reflecting on their unexpected bond.

Smith’s personal growth became evident when she decided not to rush into marriage after her previous experiences. Her memoir details her earlier marriages to Roger Davis, Dennis Cole, and Anthony B. Richmond, highlighting the challenges she faced with infidelity and substance abuse.

Smith’s third marriage to Richmond was especially strained due to his struggles with drugs and alcohol, prompting her to prioritize her children’s wellbeing. The actress, now a breast cancer survivor, acknowledges her resilience throughout these trials, attributing it to her early upbringing and parental support.

“In writing this book, I learned that I’m really strong,” Smith observed, emphasizing her commitment to her family over her ambitions.

Reflecting on her career, Smith emphasized the importance of embracing opportunities as they come, without rigid plans. This approach led her to iconic roles and, ultimately, a fulfilling life both professionally and personally.
