Mayor Mamdani and President Trump Discuss Housing Plans and Immigration

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump held a significant meeting at Gracie Mansion in New York City. This marked their third meeting, with the previous two occurring at the White House after Mamdani’s successful mayoral election. The initial encounter involved the mayor proposing a substantial housing initiative in Queens, linked to billions of federal assistance, which was promoted with a mocked-up Daily News headline reading “Trump To City: Let’s Build.”

Although the meeting on Monday reiterated the affordable housing strategy, detailed information regarding the discussions was limited. In addition to housing, both leaders addressed immigration issues without divulging specifics. They emphasized their ongoing commitment to improving the lives of New Yorkers, a theme recurrent in all their meetings.

During a joint press conference, Mamdani updated the public on the Queens housing project, which involves the ambitious construction of the world’s largest rail deck over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard, topped with 12,000 housing units. This innovative proposal was initially considered by the former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration. Mamdani expressed his enthusiasm about establishing a higher level of communication between City Hall and the White House teams to focus on the creation of housing and jobs.

“We spoke about Sunnyside Yards,” Mamdani said. “It’s a real pleasure that just today we agreed to set up a new level of that conversation between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team because what we’re speaking about is 12,000 homes, 30,000 jobs.”

President Trump acknowledged the federal requirements of the Sunnyside Yards project, highlighting the need for federal approvals and funding. The site remains a favored location despite the complexities involved.

Carlo Scissura, a former member of the Sunnyside Yards task force, applauded the mayor and president’s collaboration, suggesting the development could rejuvenate an underutilized area significantly greater than other urban projects across the nation. However, City Councilwoman Julie Won voiced her concern over resource allocation, questioning whether tackling immediate issues like housing and healthcare should take precedence.

“What are we really talking about here? Do we want to solve the housing crisis now? And also the healthcare crisis?” Won questioned. “Or are we talking about building housing on a deck 50 to 100 years from now?”

This meeting took place during the United Nations General Assembly week, where President Trump is slated to address key international issues such as the war with Iran and peace efforts in Gaza. Meetings with leaders from various countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine, are scheduled. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel will miss the opportunity to meet Trump due to scheduling conflicts, only arriving in New York after Trump’s departure.
