FAA Technology Outage Disrupts Flights Across Northeast Airports

FAA Equipment Failure Causes Flight Disruptions

Significant flight delays, cancellations, and diversions were reported on Monday due to a technology failure at a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control facility. The disruption affected airlines throughout the Northeast region, particularly impacting operations at Newark Liberty International Airport.

An FAA spokesperson explained that flights scheduled to arrive at Newark were either held at their departure airports or redirected to other locations. The spokesperson emphasized that efforts to restore service are underway and that travel waivers have been issued to assist passengers in adjusting their travel plans.

Affected Airports and Impact

The outage arose from communication issues at Philadelphia TRACON, leading to temporary ground stops at several major airports. Initially hitting Newark Liberty, Philadelphia International, and Teterboro Airport, the disruption eventually stretched to John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York.

“This is unacceptable in America,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated, highlighting the need for solutions and resources to rectify the situation.

Details on Specific Airport Disruptions

  • Newark Liberty International Airport: Newark experienced 282 flight cancellations and 208 delays. Flights included international services from Iceland, France, Spain, Greece, and Egypt.
  • Philadelphia International Airport: Philadelphia was heavily impacted due to issues at Philadelphia TRACON, leading to 124 cancellations and 395 delays.
  • Teterboro Airport: Flights into Teterboro Airport were stopped, with delays lasting several hours as the FAA addressed communication failures.
  • JFK and LaGuardia Airports: These airports faced temporary ground stops and delays owing to mounting air traffic congestion.

Technical Details and Repair Efforts

The FAA identified that the issues were due to radio frequency problems at Philadelphia TRACON, with both the primary circuit and a backup line failing. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford explained that the problem might have originated from a damaged fiber connection between New Brunswick and Newark. Completing repairs and installing a replacement circuit is projected to take several hours.

An initial attempt to restore normal operations was unsuccessful. Although service is being reinstated at JFK and LaGuardia, restrictions are maintained at Newark, Philadelphia, and Teterboro as ongoing repair efforts proceed.

Advice to Passengers

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines directly for the latest flight information. Even after resolving technical problems, further delays are anticipated as airlines handle aircraft diversions and scheduling adjustments across affected regions.
