Macklemore Support Grows Amid Pro-Palestinian Activism Controversy

Rapper Macklemore continues to receive support amid ongoing criticism for his pro-Palestinian stance during a recent set for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., highlighted the situation in a fundraising memo, criticizing billionaire Robert Kraft for his reported influence in removing Macklemore from the tour. “This is about how a small handful of powerful people can threaten someone’s livelihood to prevent discussion of issues like the genocide in Gaza,” the memo states.

Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the broader implications, warning that oligarchs can similarly suppress other topics, including AI and workers’ rights. She described the situation as a test of how powerful entities censor speech, urging people to recognize it as an abuse of power. She also called for focus on Kraft’s influence in controlling discourse in America.

Macklemore, known for his hit “Thrift Shop,” declared “Free Palestine” during a show in New Jersey on September 4. His performance included a song inspired by anti-Israel protests at Columbia University. Despite being asked to refrain, Macklemore reiterated his message the next night, clarifying it was directed at Israel, not Judaism.

In response to the backlash, Kraft explained his stance to NBC News, stating it related to harmful public discourse towards Jewish communities. He expressed willingness to discuss peace with Macklemore. Amid the fallout, Kraft has pledged $2 million to assist Palestinians. Kraft, well-known for his relationship with Ed Sheeran and political donations to Trump, remains a figure of interest in the controversy.
