Ten lions were discovered dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Authorities suspect poisoning as the cause. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) announced this news on September 18, 2026. The incident took place in the Ndutu area. Officials stated that initial investigations indicate the lions ingested poison. An expert team is working to confirm the cause and identify those responsible.
Ngorongoro has experienced ongoing tensions between authorities and local nomadic communities. These clashes have sometimes resulted in fatalities since the Tanzanian government commenced an eviction program in 2022. Government officials claim that population growth is affecting wildlife habitats. The human population in Ngorongoro has increased from about 8,000 in 1959 to over 100,000 now.
UNESCO reports that Ngorongoro is home to approximately 25,000 large animals, with the densest known lion population. Lions are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to threats such as habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. The population of lions is declining.
In a related issue, 20 elephants have died since June in Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem, near the Tanzanian border. These deaths are suspected to be caused by pesticide poisoning. Authorities are unable to determine whether these elephant deaths were accidental or deliberate. Kenya has seen elephant poisonings in the past due to poaching and human-wildlife conflicts. However, officials note that this scale of elephant deaths is unprecedented in recent decades.
