Ed Sheeran Addresses Controversy at Philadelphia Concert

Ed Sheeran expressed deep emotion during his comeback to the stage in Philadelphia on Saturday. His return followed criticism after Macklemore’s removal from Sheeran’s tour.

Opening his show at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran apologized to fans, acknowledging, “I’ve had to make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t want to disappoint fans.” He addressed his stance on the Israel and Palestine situation, saying, “I’ve tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind, because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division.”

“But this is a humanitarian issue and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore,” he continued. “What happened in Israel at a … music festival on October 7 was horrific, and what is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

Sheeran emphasized his efforts to contribute positively, stating, “I am already speaking to people across the spectrum to work out how to help victims of these terrible times.”

Despite uncertainty about the audience’s reaction, Sheeran went forward with the performance. “I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me,” he remarked to applause. He made adjustments to the show for safety reasons, removing the B stage.

Macklemore, who goes by Ben Haggerty, had been dropped from Sheeran’s Loop Tour after promoting “Free Palestine” during his performance. Sheeran later clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by concert promoters and venues.

Pro-Palestinian protesters were present outside the concert, displaying banners and chanting. Sheeran’s stance remains focused on music as a unifying force.
