A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player lost his life, and another was injured in a stabbing incident. The event occurred early Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island, as reported by the police.
A UMass Dartmouth student later faced charges of murder. The incident unfolded after Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back, and his teammates visited a nightclub in Providence on Friday night. This followed a home game defeat to Framingham State.
The Providence police revealed that an altercation at Mezzo Lounge escalated to the parking lot of a nearby Wendy’s restaurant. It was there that the two players were stabbed.
Marvins Antoine, aged 18, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with stab wounds to his chest, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Kensley Macean, a 19-year-old freshman defensive back, received medical attention for injuries described as non-life-threatening, affecting his head, neck, and left arm.
During a news conference, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez announced that Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, another UMass Dartmouth student aged 19, was arrested on campus. Eze, who does not play on the football team, remains in custody, awaiting transfer to Rhode Island for a murder charge.
Perez mentioned the conflict involved a verbal altercation between a female and some individuals waiting in line. This dispute subsequently moved to the Wendy’s parking lot. Investigators are still piecing together the events leading to the stabbings.
Flock cameras in the vicinity aided in identifying the vehicle Eze used to flee, enabling officers to locate him back on campus. UMass Dartmouth is situated approximately 30 miles from Providence and 60 miles from Boston.
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller expressed condolences in a statement:
“Our hearts and prayers are with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates as we mourn his loss together. We also hope for Kensley’s swift recovery and his return to education.”
Antoine, an alumnus of Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, was remembered fondly by former teammates. Orlando Delgado, who played alongside him in high school, described Antoine as a role model and dreamer who aspired to reach the NFL. Delgado shared cherished memories of their friendship and Antoine’s positive influence.
Further testimonials came from Ashania Chambers and Xavier Gracia. Chambers, Delgado’s mother, remarked on Antoine’s peaceful nature, and Gracia, another teammate, acknowledged the loss of someone who was like an older brother to many in his class.
