Tragic Falls Claim Lives of Two Hikers on Sauk Mountain

A man from Washington state fell to his death while hiking recently, according to authorities. Gary Idleburg, aged 66, was navigating a switchback trail on Sauk Mountain in the Northern Cascades, northeast of Seattle, when he fell between 800 and 1,000 feet last Saturday. Observers on the trail saw the tragic incident occur.

Emergency responders were quick to the scene and attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, Idleburg was declared deceased at the location, as confirmed by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

The day prior, another hiker was discovered deceased on the same mountain’s steep terrain. This individual was 78-year-old Peter Kalapaca, who had been missing for a single day before being found.

The sheriff’s office extended their condolences to the Kalapaca family, acknowledging the difficulty of the loss while expressing appreciation for the extensive efforts made in the search operation. They mentioned, “While nothing can lessen the loss of a loved one, we are grateful for the extraordinary effort by everyone involved, which allows some measure of closure for the family.” Both cases involved challenging terrain.

Idleburg’s recovery proved particularly challenging due to the harsh landscape. Meanwhile, Kalapaca’s search efforts included ground teams, air resources, air-scent K9 units, and mountain rescue personnel who worked late into the evening.

Witnesses played a crucial role by guiding rescuers to the area where Idleburg had fallen. The incident highlights the risks involved in hiking on such terrain.
