Matt Russo’s Pivotal Role
Matt Russo, the center for Naperville Central football, thrives in his crucial yet low-profile position. He plays an essential role in starting plays, as the ball must be snapped before action begins. Russo reflects on this with pride, stating, “It’s just such an awesome position because I get to touch the ball every play. It’s a very important position, but I love doing it, and I love doing it for my brothers beside me, my teammates.” His commitment has garnered appreciation from teammates and coaches alike.
Team Appreciation and Growth
Senior quarterback Simon Hayes shared his admiration for Russo following a victory against Metea Valley, saying, “It’s awesome having a center like him. We watched some clips before the game, and you see Matt laying his body on the line and diving to make blocks. Having a center like that means the world to me.” Both Hayes and Russo advanced to varsity from the freshman B team, their bond strengthening their collaborative performance.
Russo’s journey began without prior tackle football experience until his freshman year. He detailed, “My coach put me at center because he saw that I could snap the ball a little bit.” Starting on the sophomore team, he found his place at center, though he also played right tackle. His versatility impressed Coach Mike Ulreich, who noted, “Matt played right tackle for us for seven games last year. He doesn’t look like a right tackle. But he just plays as hard as he possibly can for every snap.”
The Demands of Playing Center
Playing center requires poise, intelligence, and substantial responsibility. Russo explained, “It’s definitely a lot of responsibility. I would say presnap it’s the hardest position on the offensive line.” His duties include making strategic calls, ensuring teammates know their blocking assignments, and setting up pass block formations. Ulreich affirmed Russo’s pivotal role by saying, “He makes all the calls. He calls the front. He calls all of our run calls. He’s awesome.”
Despite the lack of public recognition for offensive linemen, coaches value the grit they exhibit. Ulreich highlighted this, saying, “On Friday, we usually show some highlight plays from the game, just tough, gritty-type plays, not the highlights that are in the paper, but plays that are selfless and tough. Matt Russo puts his body on the line every single snap.” Hayes also praised Russo’s reliability, expressing his trust in Russo’s performance.
Tenacity in Adversity
In a match against Metea Valley, Naperville Central overcame four turnovers in the first half, with their running game proving crucial. Despite throwing two interceptions, Hayes credited the offensive line’s resilience, including Russo’s efforts, for the team’s success. The Redhawks recorded 257 rushing yards, with senior running back Landon Nelson achieving a career-high 219 yards. Their strategy emphasized running plays, backed by the linemen’s offseason dedication.
“Matt Russo is Example A of that hard work,” Ulreich remarked. “Matt is unbelievable.”
Matt Russo’s hard work and leadership epitomize the spirit and dedication essential to Naperville Central’s football success.
