New Initiatives in Defense and National Security
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed active-duty officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., unveiling six new initiatives. His 52-minute speech introduced a new combatant command to focus on autonomous warfare development, forming partnerships with colleges, a new Office of Religious Affairs, and inviting governors to collaborate on building a new military base within the country.
Hegseth’s remarks revisited his frequent critiques of cultural issues, advocating the removal of what he described as ‘woke’ elements from the Pentagon. He criticized media coverage of the Iran war and asserted that the ‘warrior ethos’ has been revived and the military ‘rebuilt.’
Internal Changes and Personnel Decisions
Hegseth defended his plan to reduce the number of generals and admirals at the Pentagon by 20%, stating the restructuring was ‘long overdue.’ He urged military leaders to embrace commonsense, constitutional values.
Project Meridian
Defense Secretary Hegseth announced ‘Project Meridian,’ a new initiative led by SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey, and former Speaker Newt Gingrich. The project aims to utilize American technological innovation to anticipate the future of warfare.
Conclusion of U.S. Military Mission in Iraq
U.S. Central Command announced the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, concluding a 12-year military mission. Forces and equipment departed Erbil Air Base, marking the end of Operation Inherent Resolve and transitioning to a bilateral defense relationship with Iraq. Operations will continue in Jordan as U.S. forces counter ISIS in Syria.
Invitation to Build New Military Base
During the speech, Hegseth invited U.S. governors to compete for the establishment of a new military base. He called upon state leaders to present proposals showcasing their state as the ideal location for the ‘next great American base.’
