Debate Overview
Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton faced each other in their only scheduled debate ahead of the vote for California’s governor. A poll co-sponsored by The Times showed Becerra leading Hilton 58% to 33%. This poll, conducted by UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, highlighted cost of living as the top concern for California voters, followed by opposition to the Trump administration.
Candidate Visions for California
The debate featured their sharply different plans for California’s future. Becerra, a Democrat with extensive political experience, focused on solidifying liberal policies and opposing Trump. In contrast, Hilton aimed to cut taxes, reduce regulations, and minimize state government size.
Education
On education, Becerra argued the state’s system needs better coordination and highlighted transitional kindergarten as a positive development. He criticized Hilton’s plans to divert funds to private schools. Hilton, however, blamed Democratic governance for educational failures and accused Becerra of being influenced by teacher unions.
Immigration
Hilton criticized Becerra’s handling of unaccompanied immigrant minors during the COVID-19 pandemic. He accused him of inadequate vetting, which allegedly led to minors being exploited. Becerra defended his efforts and criticized Hilton’s immigration stance, calling it biased against non-European immigrants.
Election System and Voter ID
Hilton rejected claims of a crooked election system and supported Proposition 39, which requires voter ID. Becerra opposed this proposition, suggesting it restricts voting, and associated it with Trump’s influence.
Homelessness
Becerra promised accountability and better mental health services to address homelessness. Hilton criticized this approach, saying it aligns with failed Democratic policies and lacks effective change strategies.
Trump’s Influence
Throughout the debate, Becerra highlighted Hilton’s ties to Trump, which could negatively impact Hilton in the general election despite helping in the primary.
Housing Crisis
When discussing housing, Becerra pointed to legal actions to enforce building regulations. Hilton proposed creating new cities as part of a broader infrastructure development plan.
Artificial Intelligence
The debate touched on AI, with Becerra stressing the need for regulations. Hilton expressed concerns about job losses to other states but did not present a clear stance on self-regulation by AI companies.
Cost of Living
Becerra criticized Hilton’s economic plans, claiming they would worsen conditions for working families. In response, Hilton argued that reducing government taxes could ease living costs.
