The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant midseason trade by acquiring Joey Porter Jr., a cornerback from the Pittsburgh Steelers. This deal involves the Cowboys giving the Steelers a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick. The trade was first reported by Tom Pelissero of The Ringer.
Porter Jr. has been with the Steelers for the past three seasons after being selected as the 32nd pick in the 2023 draft. He has accumulated 165 tackles, 31 pass breakups, and three interceptions over 47 games. Last season, Pro Football Reference recorded that Porter Jr. allowed a 48.5% completion rate and a 57.2 quarterback rating during his coverage. Notably, he recorded his first career sack in a victory against the Indianapolis Colts.
Porter has not played this season due to a contract dispute with the Steelers and had already been ruled out for an upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns because of a back injury. Despite this, a source informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter that there is a possibility the 26-year-old could debut for the Cowboys this Sunday against the Houston Texans.
The Cowboys’ defense, which Porter joins, has been struggling, allowing an NFC-high 72.6% completion rate in the first three weeks. The team has given up an average of 27.3 points per game and has yet to record an interception, contributing to their 1-2 start. Injuries have also plagued Dallas, with cornerback Cobie Durant sidelined due to a hamstring injury and Shavon Revel Jr. suffering another knee injury last weekend.
Following the trade announcement, Porter expressed his excitement in an Instagram story, stating, “Here I come … Dallas.”
