Week 5 Shifts in College Football Rankings Reveal Surprising Changes

Week 5 of the college football season lacked blockbuster matchups, but drama still unfolded. Only three games featured ranked opponents. By Sunday, notable changes appeared in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

The most significant shift came from Missouri. The Tigers soared after decisively beating Florida, 45-17. Just one week earlier, Florida had a commanding win over Ole Miss. Despite Alabama’s strong win over Mississippi State, they ascended just one spot to No. 6, overtaking Indiana. Indiana fell one spot despite a victory over Rutgers.

The latest AP Top 25 Poll ranks the top teams as follows:

  1. Texas
  2. Georgia
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Miami (FL)
  5. Ohio State
  6. Alabama
  7. Indiana
  8. BYU
  9. Ole Miss
  10. LSU
  11. Texas Tech
  12. Utah
  13. Oregon
  14. Missouri
  15. Tennessee
  16. Florida
  17. Mississippi State
  18. Oklahoma State
  19. USC
  20. Iowa
  21. UCLA
  22. Houston
  23. Boise State
  24. SMU
  25. Pittsburgh

The Top 8 remains stable, yet debates arise past that point. The SEC teams encountered particular volatility. Ole Miss held No. 9 despite a bye week after their previous loss to Florida. LSU climbed to No. 10, with a 4-1 record after defeating McNeese. Missouri’s massive 11-spot rise to No. 14 followed their win over Florida. In contrast, Florida plummeted eight spots following their loss, while Mississippi State dropped one spot to No. 17 after a substantial defeat by Alabama.

The Kentucky Wildcats are particularly aggrieved, dropping out of the rankings after an overtime win over South Carolina.

Big Ten supporters largely remain content with six teams in the latest poll. However, USC fans might voice displeasure as their team fell six spots to No. 18, despite a comeback win against Washington. This drop contrasts with Oregon’s five-spot rise despite not playing in Week 5.
