Israel Marks the Third Anniversary of the Devastating Hamas Attack

Three years ago, a Hamas-led attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 251 hostages. This event traumatized Israel and altered the region’s dynamics. Memorials for the victims of the October 7 attacks have taken place at various sites, including homes, roadsides, kibbutzim, and the Nova music festival. More than 360 people were killed, and 44 hostages were taken during this tragic event.

The assault sparked a war in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians, famine, and widespread destruction. The conflict expanded to involve Lebanon and Syria and provoked severe global criticism of Israel. Three years later, around 80% of Gaza’s infrastructure is reportedly damaged, and most of its over 2 million residents have been displaced to less than half of the territory’s original area. Despite a fragile ceasefire lasting nearly a year, Israeli strikes continue.

Solemn Memorials and an Impending Election

As Israel commemorates these events, political tensions rise with an election looming. In 20 days, Israelis will vote on whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will remain in power. Netanyahu, who was leading Israel during the attack, faces accusations of failure before and after that day. Opponents criticize his allowance of Qatari funds into Gaza and ignoring UAE warnings of a Hamas attack. They also demand a public inquiry into his handling of the situation, fearing the revelations could harm him politically.

Netanyahu assigns blame to military and security leaders for not preventing the attacks and refutes receiving any warnings from the UAE about the plot. His campaign focuses on retaliating against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran. A poll by the Israeli Democracy Institute indicates that 62% of Israelis see the attacks as crucial in their voting decisions, although neither pro- nor anti-Netanyahu factions are likely to gain a clear majority in the Knesset.

Indelible Trauma and Resilience

Lucas Cunio, a resident of Nir Oz kibbutz, recounts the personal impact of the attacks, describing unhealed trauma. Approximately a quarter of the 400 residents of Nir Oz, including Cunio’s brothers, were killed or kidnapped during the attack. Both his brothers were freed after over two years in captivity. To cope, Cunio joined a surfing club, finding solace on the water.

Hamas’ Stance and Ongoing Violence

A Hamas military wing spokesperson praised the October 7 attackers, emphasizing their perceived historical impact. The subsequent war resulted in massive casualties and displacement, with ongoing Israeli strikes. In the past 24 hours, four additional casualties occurred in Gaza, despite the maintained ceasefire.

Global Reflections and Antisemitic Surge

Israelis in Tel Aviv participated in memorials, showing solidarity at various landmarks. Concurrently, a report from the Anti-Defamation League indicated 2025 as the deadliest year for antisemitic attacks outside Israel in three decades. Notably, 97% more violent incidents occurred compared to 2022.

Memorials at the kibbutz of Kfar Aza, where 80 were killed, commenced at the specific time of the original attack. The upcoming Israeli election sees the 2023 assault as a significant factor for voters.

Hostage Crisis Resolution

This anniversary is the first without any Israeli hostages in Gaza. The last living hostages were returned last year, concluding Israel’s 843-day hostage ordeal. While hostage posters no longer dominate public spaces, stickers honoring the deceased persist.

Across Australia, vigils remembered the Bondi Beach attack at a Hanukkah celebration. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed support for the Jewish community and denounced antisemitism, calling for Hamas disarmament and progress toward a two-state resolution.

Gatherings continue at the Nova music festival site, where mourners remember the lives lost in the 2023 attacks. An emotional toll remains on survivors and the families of those who perished.

Travel Warnings and Caution Abroad

Israel’s National Security Council advises Israelis abroad to enhance their vigilance amid heightened risks, especially relevant on this anniversary of the October 7 incidents. Caution is urged in particular destinations, and social media discretion is recommended to avoid security service exposure.
