Remembering RJ Mitte: Advocate and Actor

Growing up in a family with a cerebral palsy member makes seeing an actor with CP on screen a rare and impactful sight. When RJ Mitte appeared as Walter White Jr. in Breaking Bad in 2008, it truly captured attention. Viewing Bryan Cranston’s performance was exciting, but watching Mitte’s portrayal at the breakfast table was transformative. News of his death at just 34 is tough to comprehend.

It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his representatives stated. The cause of death was not immediately shared.

In earlier years, there was virtually no representation for someone like my older brother, who has CP, in popular culture. For those who love someone with cerebral palsy, childhood is filled with explaining the condition’s mechanics, countering misconceptions, and managing confused reactions from others.

Comments like “He seems fine” carried the weight of ignoring what made others uncomfortable. This led to exhaustion, making it easier to let misconceptions stand rather than correcting them in casual settings.

Then came RJ Mitte. Walter Jr. was extraordinary not because the show ignored his CP, but because it portrayed it as just a part of his character. He wasn’t a shallow motivational figure aimed at making able-bodied viewers feel good. He was a regular teen, with moods, impulses, and a strong preference for Raisin Bran Crunch—simply navigating life with a disability.

Mitte shared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast that Walt Jr.’s character was always intended to have CP, based on a college friend of creator Vince Gilligan.

Off-screen, Mitte used his visibility to become an advocate, ensuring that Hollywood addressed disabilities seriously, not as a novelty. Susan Sellers, president and CEO of United Cerebral Palsy, where Mitte served as an honorary trustee, emphasized his dedication to raising awareness and promoting inclusion.

RJ used his platform to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and advance understanding and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Loving someone with a disability changes how you interact with the world. You become attuned to every inaccessible ramp, broken curb, and thoughtless remark, learning to anticipate needs as your life revolves around addressing them. Many families live on the fringes, adapting quietly to avoid inconveniencing others. RJ Mitte brought this reality to the forefront, proving that families navigate life differently, and with awareness, all can share the same space.

In his work, Mitte ensured consideration for those feeling invisible. To many, his memory offers a lasting blessing.
