The Dallas Cowboys continue to face defensive challenges that have persisted since the 2025 season. Their recent home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Thursday Night Football” has led to a new addition to the coaching staff. The Cowboys have appointed long-time NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, collaborating with defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Parker, 34, has encountered difficulties with his defensive unit in his first year in the role.
Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed optimism about Pettine’s hiring, stating, “It’s something we’ve been talking about for a long time. I think as we looked at everything, we had a chance to convince Pett that it made sense for him.” Schottenheimer believes Pettine’s experience will add significant value to the team.
Christian Parker, the youngest defensive coordinator in Cowboys history, personally sought Pettine’s expertise when he was first appointed in January. Parker began his NFL career in 2019 as a quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers, where Pettine was the defensive coordinator. Schottenheimer also shares history with Pettine, working together previously on Rex Ryan’s New York Jets staff.
Pettine had retired before the 2026 season but reconsidered following the Cowboys’ recent loss to Tampa Bay. From 2022 until last season, Pettine served as an assistant head coach under Kevin O’Connell with the Minnesota Vikings. Additionally, he worked as a senior defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears in 2021.
The Cowboys, who currently hold a 2-3 record, have been struggling defensively. They have allowed an average of 395.4 yards per game, ranking them second in yards allowed. Their run defense is the weakest in the league, conceding 168.4 yards per game. Meanwhile, they stand 26th in points allowed per game with a 27.2 average. Despite these challenges, Dallas’s offense, led by Dak Prescott, ranks seventh in scoring with 27.6 points per game.
Pettine’s experience is expected to address the defensive shortcomings, alongside Christian Parker’s current strategy, which has received positive feedback despite the results. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of trust between coaching staff members, saying, “When you bring someone into this role, you want it to be someone that the coordinator, the head coach trusts.” This foundation aims to ensure effective collaboration between Pettine and Parker.
The Cowboys are set to face Pettine and Parker’s former team, the Green Bay Packers, in a “Sunday Night Football” matchup during Week 6.
