New York Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier stated on Twitch that the criminal history of a man shot by an ICE officer is irrelevant. This statement arose after 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, a Dominican Republic national, was shot during a targeted operation by ICE.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Belgal was in the country illegally and did not comply with officers. Despite his past criminal records, Chevalier and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker criticized authorities for using force.
During the confrontation, Belgal attempted to move his vehicle forward before an officer fired seven shots, one of which struck him below his left ear. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Belgal’s previous arrests for robbery and drug sales.
Piker questioned the necessity of emphasizing Belgal’s criminal history. Chevalier expressed anger at the portrayal of Belgal, suggesting that his past did not justify the shooting.
ICE faced criticism from Chevalier and others, who described the agency as rogue and accused it of viewing legal codes dismissively.
The New York State Republican Committee condemned Chevalier’s stance as evidence of the Democratic Party’s extreme tendencies. They argued that ICE agents lawfully responded to Belgal’s resistance during his arrest.
Fox News Digital sought further comments from Chevalier’s campaign and received input from the NYPD, affirming that releasing criminal histories in incident updates is routine practice.
Conversations around this event have escalated, with reactions from political figures highlighting the divide on law enforcement’s role in handling immigration-related incidents.
