New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has affirmed his decision to retain NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, despite pressure to dismiss her. The calls for her removal came from Democratic Socialist allies following a controversial ICE-involved shooting in the Bronx.
During a ceremony honoring fallen NYPD officers, Mamdani clarified his stance concerning Tisch’s leadership. He stated, “Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that.” He highlighted her achievements, emphasizing her role in lowering crime rates while tackling corruption within the NYPD. In the last ten months, under Tisch’s leadership, New York City recorded the lowest numbers of murders and shootings.
The New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America demanded Tisch’s ouster after the ICE-related shooting of Oscar Belgal. Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot during a federal immigration operation, reportedly for not complying with officers’ commands.
Mamdani is reviewing the shooting’s circumstances but underscores Tisch’s continued leadership. Scott Munro, President of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, expressed optimism about Mamdani’s support for Tisch, noting crime reduction under her tenure.
At the New York City Police Memorial, Mamdani and Tisch commemorated 42 fallen NYPD members, including victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and a detective killed in a 2025 mass shooting. Mamdani honored the officers and vowed to preserve their memory.
This week, Mamdani instructed the NYPD to review its use-of-force policies and to enforce reforms enhancing accountability for any misconduct by officers.
