The historical approach of the Luddites to the Industrial Revolution was simple: destroy the machines. Now, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed from Michigan suggests a similar approach toward the progression of artificial intelligence. During a town hall meeting on Sunday in Ionia, Michigan, El-Sayed presented his viewpoint on the regulation of AI technologies.
El-Sayed is concerned about AI systems advancing to a point where they surpass human intelligence in most tasks. He announced on Tuesday a proposal to ‘permanently prohibit any AI that outthinks humans across most tasks.’ This plan addresses the potential risks associated with highly advanced AI and reflects a cautious stance on technological development.
An alternative consideration in this debate comes from cybersecurity principles, which some experts believe could provide more effective methods of managing the growth and impact of artificial intelligence. These principles could offer a balanced approach to ensuring AI is developed safely while avoiding drastic measures like a complete shutdown.
