Federal Investigation Intensifies on Rep. Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar Under Investigation

Federal authorities are investigating Minnesota U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar. They seized her phone and have issued over a dozen grand jury subpoenas, some directed at her relatives. These actions escalate an inquiry into her immigration paperwork as President Donald Trump renews attacks on her citizenship with midterm elections approaching.

Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C.-area residence two days ago. Concurrently, Washington, D.C., U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed a separate probe into Omar’s financial disclosures. The Department of Justice confirmed the October 12 search was part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

Investigations Explore Omar’s Immigration and Finances

The subpoenas are connected to a Minnesota grand jury gathering evidence on potential fraud involving Omar’s immigration paperwork, as reported by the Associated Press. The examination led agents to search Omar’s home. The specifics of the investigation are still vague, but Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin indicated potential crimes related to Omar’s family immigration paperwork are under review. Omar has not been charged with any crime.

Pirro mentioned multiple investigations concerning Omar, confirming her office’s inquiry into the congresswoman’s financial disclosures. She stated, “If there was a crime that was committed, it will be prosecuted.” There is no public indication if financial and immigration probes are related.

Trump’s Renewed Criticism Amid Citizenship Concerns

The investigations coincide with renewed scrutiny from Trump, who frequently questions Omar’s background. At a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump criticized Omar’s Somali origins and questioned her constitutional rights, causing rally attendees to chant “deport.”

On Tuesday, Trump labeled Omar as a “terrible person” and congresswoman, yet refrained from expressing a deportation stance. Omar, a refugee who became a U.S. citizen in 2000, has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019 and seeks reelection.

Allegations claim Omar married her brother to assist his U.S. entry, which she denies. This claim, yet unproven, is part of the scrutiny. Constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley noted that if false data affecting citizenship eligibility is proven, denaturalization could occur, though the standard is demanding.

Omar Denounces Political Intimidation Tactics

Omar criticized the search as “political intimidation” by Trump’s administration, stating federal law enforcement targets political opponents. “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” Omar wrote. She accused Trump of targeting her with baseless campaigns, declaring her refusal to be silenced.

The search, occurring within three weeks of the midterm elections, has sparked criticisms from Democrats, who called it disturbing. A joint statement by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top Democrats accused Trump of enabling a harmful deportation approach aimed unjustly at an elected member and her family.
