Illinois Governor Supports Project to Document Trump-Era Immigration Enforcement

An online initiative, supported by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, is documenting individuals reportedly affected by immigration policies under former President Donald Trump. The project, ‘Disappeared in America,’ receives backing from Pritzker’s Illinois Accountability Commission. It aims to create a record of how immigration enforcement, especially during operations like Chicago’s Operation Midway Blitz, impacted both immigrants and citizens.

Project Goal and Stories

‘Disappeared in America’ presents an interactive database featuring nearly 500 cases. Stories include tragic incidents such as Lorenza Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, who were fatally shot by ICE agents. Videos, audio recordings, and photos accompany many profiles, offering detailed insights into detention and deportation cases.

Beatriz Lopez, co-founder of the Democracy Power Project, emphasizes the objective: ‘Our end goal…is that this can never happen again.’ The database seeks to make these stories visible, preventing similar scenarios in the future.

The Role of the Illinois Accountability Commission

Governor Pritzker established the Illinois Accountability Commission during Operation Midway Blitz, which drew significant criticism. The commission targeted investigating the actions of federal agents and addressing civil liberties violations.

Executive director Hina Mahmood noted that the commission arose from individuals sharing their experiences despite fears. This collective action sought to document the truth, influencing similar initiatives nationwide.

Competing Narratives on Immigration Enforcement

Contrasting views exist regarding ICE’s operations. Detractors argue that ICE disproportionately targets non-criminal immigrants and separates families. Conversely, the Trump administration highlighted efforts to apprehend dangerous offenders.

While ICE has presented its operations as targeting individuals involved in serious crimes, critics point out instances where non-criminal immigrants have faced stringent enforcement.

Future Accountability Efforts

Lopez stresses that the initiative’s ambition extends beyond documentation. There is a call for policy reforms and holding administrations accountable, with other states projected to join the effort.

The project aims to serve as a mandate for future lawmakers to implement changes ensuring stricter oversight of immigration enforcement agencies.
