French President Emmanuel Macron received backlash for attending a Celine Dion concert on the night before widespread protests turned violent. The demonstrations left numerous emergency personnel injured and resulted in nearly 1,800 arrests.
Macron and his wife, Brigitte, were seen at the concert in the Plenitude Arena, Nanterre, as reported by French media. Their attendance came after Macron participated in a European Council meeting in Brussels, where he appealed for calm before the planned protests.
The demonstrations, driven by issues like rising living costs and poor public services, intensified into chaotic disturbances, fires, and looting in various cities. The violence led to the arrest of nearly 1,800 individuals across the nation, with 855 in Paris alone. Over 500 police, gendarmes, and firefighters suffered injuries, and one protester died after cardiac arrest during the Paris events.
“Those damaging property and inciting chaos will face prosecution,” Macron stated, showing firm support for law enforcement.
In Limoges, protestors set fire to the city hall, heavily damaging the historical site. Shops in cities like Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Lyon faced looting, while public buildings were vandalized.
Authorities reported over 550,000 demonstrators nationwide, though organizers cited approximately 800,000 participants. The protests began with student-led movements over inadequate school conditions and teacher shortages. They evolved into broader opposition against government policies.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu blamed extremist left groups and criminals for the unrest. Opposition leaders criticized the government over its response, while Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticized different aspects of the situation.
Business owners face extensive losses, especially Carrefour, where 50 stores were affected. The mayors of several cities requested discussions with the prime minister on the fallout.
President Macron plans to address the nation as France starts recovery efforts and prosecutions. His speech will be critical amid pressure regarding the destruction and associated economic issues.
