New York Giants Release Najee Harris After Performance Criticism

The New York Giants remain on the hunt for their standout running back, yet they’ve clearly identified who will not be taking on that role. Following recent discussions around the coaching staff’s strategy after a disappointing showing, the team has released Najee Harris.

Recently acquired during training camp due to Tyrone Tracy’s struggles, Harris had the chance to start on Sunday. Cam Skattebo found himself sidelined following another costly fumble. Skattebo participated in just six snaps without any ball possessions.

NFL fans may recall Najee Harris during the second quarter of a match against the Los Angeles Rams on September 21, 2026, in Inglewood, California.

The Giants employed a three-running-back system featuring Harris, Tracy, and Devin Singletary. Despite this, their primary rushers were quarterback JJ McCarthy (26 yards) and receiver Darnell Mooney (20 yards). John Harbaugh, reflecting on the team’s recent loss, remarked, “Nobody’s really taken the bull by the horns.”

“It’s challenging for us backs to find a rhythm,” Harris stated in the New York Daily News. “With just a few plays, it’s difficult to determine your approach on the field.”

In another game against the Tennessee Titans, Harris faced similar challenges at MetLife Stadium on September 27, 2026, in East Rutherford, NJ.

Currently, Harris records 99 rushing yards over 31 carries at an average of 3.2 yards per carry. This represents a stark contrast from his previous record of four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons since commencing his NFL career in 2021.

Initially a top pick from Alabama, Harris gained prominence as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ leading rusher for four seasons. He later joined the Los Angeles Chargers, where injuries hampered his participation throughout almost an entire season.

The Giants’ running backs average a mere 3.4 yards per carry, with Skattebo leading at 3.6 yards on average. Out of Skattebo’s 294 rushing yards, an impressive 81 yards were achieved against the Dallas Cowboys in the opening game. Subsequent performances recorded yardages of 36, 60, 58, and 59.

Fireworks might be expected in the Giants’ upcoming face-off against the resurgent Houston Texans just before their Week 8 bye.
