Italy and France Bolster Military Presence Amid Violent Riots

Italy has announced the deployment of 500 troops with enhanced police powers following violent riots over the weekend. The decision marks a direct military approach to public security in contrast to France, where authorities are also strengthening their security response after weeks of unrest.

Social media became inundated with footage showcasing unrest in France and Italy on Saturday and Sunday. The images revealed violent clashes between demonstrators and police amid burning buildings and looted stores. There were moments when police, attempting to control the violence, had to fall back.

In Paris, roughly a dozen officers faced hundreds of demonstrators but couldn’t make arrests. They resorted to rubber-bullet launchers and grenades to hold back advancing rioters while ensuring a tactical retreat. Italian police in Milan faced similar aggression when hundreds of young rioters hurled explosive firecrackers, metal barriers, and glass bottles at them, trying to seize a public square.

Ongoing demonstrations in France began last month, resulting in multiple schools being incinerated and damaged by rioters. French President Emmanuel Macron has left for a Gulf trip amid mounting political pressure.

A Fox News Digital investigation revealed an array of groups involved in the French riots, including socialist factions, Islamic advocacy organizations, and environmental activists. Financial analysts estimate the damage from these events exceeds $1 billion. Videos from the unrest have shown demonstrators waving foreign flags, such as Palestinian flags in France and an Albanian flag during Milan’s violence.

Italian media reported that many rioters in Milan were first and second-generation migrants. These individuals joined in protesting against the rising cost of living, low wages, high rents, and public service deficiencies, driven by recent protests in France and Spain.

Authorities in both countries are bracing for another wave of riots expected next weekend. France and Italy plan to deploy their armed forces to reinforce security as a response to the chaos.

France’s gendarmes, acting as military police, were instrumental in containing last weekend’s riots. The nation’s interior minister confirmed on Tuesday that the military’s presence would increase to anticipate further unrest.

The minister stated, We will deploy the Sentinelle force, obviously as a substitute to interior security forces … mostly to free police and gendarmes in their mission to maintain order. France is also preparing for upcoming presidential elections amid the tensions.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the deployment of troops in Milan. The deputy prime minister explained that the police would receive expanded powers, offering an indication of their potential role in confronting rioters.
