A total of 175 members of Congress signed a letter condemning the federal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar. However, 40 House Democrats did not add their names to the letter. Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington state led the effort, urging the Trump administration to avoid actions that could affect the upcoming election.
The letter criticized the search of Omar’s Washington, D.C., home and called on Attorney General Todd Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to cease any actions that could influence the November 3 election. Omar faces Republican John Nagel, a retired Minnesota State Patrol lieutenant.
The letter emphasizes that such interference undermines the constitutional right to a free and fair election and could impact voter decisions.
Not all Democrats signed, including notable figures like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Representatives Steny Hoyer, Josh Gottheimer, Henry Cuellar, and Jared Golden. Their absence from the signatories does not necessarily mean they support the investigation or oppose the criticism.
The New York Times reported that the inquiry examines if Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was meant to fraudulently obtain a green card. While prior investigations during the Obama administration found some evidence, they did not result in legal action due to the statute of limitations. Omar denies these allegations.
The investigation also involves claims of falsified immigration documents by Omar or her late father when they arrived as refugees in the 1990s. Omar became a U.S. citizen in 2000. Federal agents searched her home on October 12, where they collected a DNA sample and spoke with Omar’s sister.
The Justice Department noted in court filings that the search warrant is partially executed and the investigation continues. Potential charges relate to an immigration-related conspiracy involving false statements. Attorney General Blanche assured that the warrant’s timing was not meant to impact the election.
A coalition of Democrats condemned the timing of the investigation as a misuse of law enforcement power, stressing their support for Omar.
