Kansas City Chiefs Maintain Confidence in Their Starting Kicker

The Kansas City Chiefs have chosen to stand by Harrison Butker as their primary kicker, despite recent performance issues. Out of his field-goal attempts this season, Butker has only succeeded in 11 out of 16, with four misses in his last four games creating concern within the team. Instead of making changes, the Chiefs introduced Justin Tucker to provide some healthy competition and encouragement. Butker, however, remains the team’s kicker.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub expressed support for Butker and highlighted the coaching staff’s commitment to improving his performance. Toub emphasized, ‘Butker is our kicker. We’re working to get him back on track, that’s our goal.’

Recent Practice Success

Despite the pressure and challenging weather conditions during practice, Butker demonstrated resilience. ‘He went 10-for-10 yesterday with Tucker observing,’ Toub reported. Even in the face of 28-mile-an-hour gusts, Butker achieved accuracy, proving his potential to put nerves aside and perform consistently.

The Chiefs considered several kickers, including Ben Sauls and Harrison Mevis, before bringing Justin Tucker into their training sessions. Toub praised Tucker’s capabilities and shared insights from other special teams coaching discussions. Tucker’s accuracy stood out, making him a valuable asset to the practice squad. ‘He was exceptional in his kicks’ accuracy, hitting within a six-foot cylinder between the uprights,’ noted Toub.

Tucker’s Suspension

Tucker spent time away from the NFL after receiving a 10-game suspension due to allegations of inappropriate behavior from multiple women. These incidents, spanning between 2012 and 2016, were reported by The Baltimore Banner. Tucker has denied all allegations, emphasizing his professionalism and adherence to respectful behavior.

His return has met with criticism but also recognition of his talent. Tucker’s presence in practice has raised questions about potential lineup changes should Butker’s issues persist, though Toub remains committed to Butker unless there’s severe need for alteration.

Team Performance and Future Outlook

Following a missed 45-yard field goal against the Seattle Seahawks, Toub acknowledged that Butker needs to improve on shorter kicks, especially when the match hinges on crucial points. ‘Missing short kicks in tight game situations cannot happen,’ stated Toub. Their encounter with the Denver Broncos will be crucial in determining Butker’s continued position as starting kicker.
