Tensions Rise as Election Nears: Stevens and Rogers Join Forces

Democratic Representative Haley Stevens appeared with Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, highlighting a rift with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. This development comes as the race towards Election Day intensifies.

Stevens narrowly lost to El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic primary in August. On Sunday, she stood beside Rogers at a Detroit church, sparking conversations around her political alignment. Despite heavy support from Senate Democrats during the primary, Stevens urged El-Sayed last week to denounce an ad linking U.S. military aid to Israel with rising grocery prices, labeling it antisemitic.

El-Sayed responded, accusing Stevens of revisiting a concluded primary. He clarified that the ad was independently produced and expressed disagreement with its message.

Sunday’s gathering included Mike Rogers and Haley Stevens at Perfecting Church in Detroit. Despite the tension, El-Sayed aims to redirect focus to Michigan’s pressing issues as he faces Rogers in the upcoming election.

Rogers commended Stevens for her stance on the controversial ad, acknowledging the concerns among Michigan Jewish voters. He described Stevens as a ‘courageous leader,’ advocating respect from voters.

Due to ongoing tensions, Stevens was requested to refrain from campaign events leading up to Tuesday’s election. Originally scheduled to join El-Sayed and Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina at a unity event on Sunday, El-Sayed expressed a preference to maintain focus on key campaign issues.

Adding to the complexity, Stevens’ fiancé, Jason Turkish, announced his support for Rogers, illustrating personal divides in the political landscape.
